I currently own a .45ACP Kimber Compact Custom. It is nice to shoot assaulting paper threats with.
However, I do miss my Browning BDM 9MM as it was also fun to shoot the evil paper with.
Target shooting is fun, and self defense is merely a bonus.
I also carry a 4.5 inch knife pretty much at all times, but have never been threatened by anything more menacing than a recent UPS delivery. It comes in very handy in those circumstances.

Originally by: Locus Bey So having the highest gun r8 death per capita of any developed nation is all about self defence ... right The only nation that comes close is switzerland who have similar gun allowances to the US. And for countries like mexico, brazil, who have a major gun problem, have a guess where they get their guns? Self defence is the excuse used by people who don't want to give up their guns. You don't see people using that excuse in Germany, Japan etc. Guns are for killing, whether or not you have done it yet, a totally neanderthal practice.
If the criminals give up their weapons and turn to raising flowers, I still want to blow holes in marauding bits of paper.

Pieces of crap. They are for movies only.
For all of you who don't know what a Desert Eagle is, watch the Matrix (any of them). I guarantee you that 9 out of 10 guns are DE's.
The agents used the DE's. Neo and Trinity used Baretta 92s when using handguns.
The DE is a movie favorite, and I love how they use them one handed...silly movies.

What I find curious is that they have blanks with enough power to get the pistol to cycle properly that don't show its true power. You'd think the cartridge would need to be neigh unto the same as the real round.
IIRC, there are modifications that need to be done to a automatic to make the slide cycle "correctly" using blanks. It has been years since I read about it, but IIRC, the locking lugs have to be ground down. Something like that. I am too lazy right now to Google it.
There are lots of misfires when they use blanks. I have seen movies where you can clearly see the actor's finger move, but nothign happens. Of course, the actors "fake" the recoil and the foley artists add the "bang" but no flame comes out of the barrel.
I always laugh. In pity. Almost as much as I do when they "teacup" or show poor safety. Well, the poor safety makes me cry...almost. Ok, I swear at them mostly, but whatever.

It should be mentioned that while some only refer to the .50 cal DE as the "Desert Eagle", they make it for far more calibers than just .50.
The lesser caliber DE's are likely what you would see someone shoot single handed...and frequently what are used (with blanks) in movies.
The calibers change, the appearance stays the same.

Originally by: Ghazi out of all the 100+ responses I doubt there are more than a handfull of people that could physically fire a .45 without dislocating their shoulder or *****ing their skulls with the recoil.
HAHA.
I get about 1-2 inches of "muzzle flip" when I fire my .45.
it isn't about size of the shooter anyway, it is proper stance, grip and arm strength. Not that much strength is really required. I am hardly "burly".
I've even tried the one handed Olympic stance and it is pretty controllable. Not too good with my left hand though. Bummer.

9mm is cheaper and less jamming problems as I can surmise from all the bad movies I've watched over the years
and the recoil sucks if you're not used to it, no matter what you fire
Jamming has little to do with the caliber. the design of the handgun and quality of the load are most important.
